SoundLab is one of Heart n Soul’s most important projects. Over the last three years we have explored how digital music making technologies can be used to help people with learning disabilities make the music they want to make.
The idea won funding from the Arts Council England / Nesta / AHRC Digital R&D Fund, which helped us to research new and innovative technologies and approaches. These were included in our SoundLab Guide, which won Best Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEN/D) resource at the Music Teacher Awards for Excellence 2016.
The project continues to grow and develop, being led by the people we work with. It is also guided by our belief of sharing fun and creativity through music and technology.
“Audience sees that people with disabilities can make music” - William (Electric Fire)
“I get to share my music and effort” - Kishaun (aka K-Dog)
“You have your own chance at making your own music” - Dean Rodney Jr
"Technology for making music has come on in leaps and bounds. I love SoundLab though, ‘cos I think it's a way you can be creative and not worry if it goes wrong. I have done 6 SoundLab talks around the country – I am proud of everything I have done at Heart n Soul but SoundLab is what I am most proud of. I think it can open up doors for almost all…Heart n Soul have made it so music isn’t a barrier - so music is possible for anyone – Joe Bloggs can walk in from the street and have no mobility at all, but there will an instrument, or an iPad or something that they can play - so it's one for getting everyone involved – that’s why I love it" - Lilly Cook (Journalist on Wheelz)
